What is a Growth Mindset?

The power of believing that you can improve

Our mind constantly observes the events that are occurring around us and translates the meaning of everything that happens. Our mindset is what mandates whether we have a positive or negative emotional response as a result of these events, and what our behaviour reaction will be.

From my learning people either have a “fixed mindset” or a “growth mindset”.

A fixed mindset refers to a person who believes their basic qualities (like intelligence and talent) are fixed and there is no emphasis made towards growth or development. “It is what it is and this is the way it is. I am like this and will always be like this”.  They become so attached to their problems, they are no longer looking for ways to move forward – they are stuck on the negative.

A growth mindset refers to a person who is continually learning and growing to better themselves and their life. Believing that challenges are not full blown overwhelming issues, just lessons to be learnt or detours to another better option. Every lesson is looked objectively “silver lining” – what do I need to learn from this? What is my part in this?

"In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” (Carol Dweck, the world's leading researcher in the field of motivation, 2015)
In my mentoring program we work together to expand your mind to new ways of thinking, with mew strategies and tools to take you out of a "fixed mindset".  Every time you push out of your comfort zone to learn something new and different you create the ability to change your mindset to growth - by creating new neural pathways.

POSITIVE OUTCOME: Living with a growth mindset challenges don’t become huge obstacles, there is a deeper understanding of yourself and others, you attract abundance, success and happiness.
